What is Math Olympiad?

2013-14 Math Olympiad Informational Letter

Math Olympiad is an international Mathematics competition for students. Our school competes in a division among other 4th-6th Grade students. Students participate in monthly contests, and receive recognition at the end of the year based on their performance throughout the year.

The purpose of Math Olympiad is...

  • Stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics
  • Introduce important Mathematical concepts
  • To teach major strategies for problem solving
  • To develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems
  • To strengthen Mathematical intuition
  • To foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity
  • To provide the satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges

Who participates in Math Olympiad?

Students in Grades 4 and 5 may participate in Math Olympiad.

This year, we are encouraging any 4th or 5th Grader interested in Math Olympiad to let their parent and/or teacher know. Teachers will recommend groups of students to participate based on classroom performance, enthusiasm, and work ethic.

Math Olympiad will be a part of weekly pull-out instruction for selected students beginning on September 20th. Each week, participants explore a topic or problem-solving strategy in depth. Five in-class monthly contests are held, given from November to March. These provide an incentive for students to intensify their study of Math. Math Olympiad instruction will conclude at the end of April.

What work is assigned for Math Olympiad?

Students MAY have practice problems to work on throughout the week. The problems are multi-step and challenging. Students are to use the strategies taught in class and are required to have written work. We prefer they attempt the problems without parental assistance - the problem-solving process is the focus, as opposed to just a correct solution.

Is Math Olympiad graded?

Math Olympiad contest scores may possibly be used as part of a student's regular mathematics grade, but if so, they will be graded on a curve.
Participation/effort, homework, and in-class work may be graded at the teacher's discretion.

A student is encouraged to complete with himself/herself. Individual growth is celebrated!
